When It Comes To Changing Your Oil, Which Category Do You Fit In?

There’s one group of people who understand the importance of engine maintenance and want to keep their vehicles in tip top shape, and another group who are either clueless as to why oil changes are important or they just don’t care.

The latter group really bothers me and here’s the reason…

Years ago I decided to be debt free.  It nearly took a decade to accomplish but I did and now I don’t owe anyone a dime… we don’t even have a mortgage payment.  I am relatively young to have achieved this and it did mean sacrifice when you compare me to my peers.

One of the main things I did to achieve my goal was to refrain from purchasing a brand new car or truck, as appealing as it seemed at times.   Automobiles are depreciating assets.   Some things do go up in value as time goes by and others go down.  Not only do cars depreciate with time but they cost money to run, maintain and fix.

My preference is to buy a car at about half of its new car price.  At this point the major loss of its value has already happened and the vehicle still has everything I need and want in a car.   A natural concern will be how well it was taken care of.  Was it leased or rented?  But, my biggest question is whether or not the oil was changed at the recommended intervals.

It’s awesome when you come across the folks that believe in maintaining their vehicle just because it’s the right thing to do, no matter if they plan on keeping it or not. On the other hand, there are those who don’t care about proper vehicle maintenance.  Especially if they don’t plan on keeping the car.

The latter group is the one the world of used cars can do without.  Yeah, all I need to do is ask to see the maintenance records, but what if the deal of the century is sitting there and there are no maintenance records?  That purchase could be a liability.  This is where you just wish everyone did the right thing and changed their motor oil when it was called for every time!
